30-Year Program
The Igombe River Forest Reserve is a government-owned protected forest in the Tabora Region of Tanzania. This ecosystem is under increasing threat from illegal logging, agricultural expansion, charcoal production, and uncontrolled grazing. Over the past 20 years, the forest has lost approximately 28,289 hectares, averaging 1,414 hectares per year—a deforestation rate of 1.41% annually. An additional 26,906 hectares have transitioned into sparsely vegetated forest, highlighting both deforestation and degradation pressures.
Recognising these threats, the Government of Tanzania has prioritised REDD+ initiatives to address forest loss while enabling sustainable community development. The Igombe REDD+ Project was conceived as part of this national effort to harness carbon markets for conservation financing, while empowering local communities through alternative income-generating activities and stronger forest management.
The Igombe REDD+ Project safeguards a vital forest landscape in western Tanzania while delivering long-term climate, biodiversity, and community benefits. By reducing deforestation, supporting alternative livelihoods, and improving forest governance, the project aligns national priorities with global climate goals.
The project is designed to deliver measurable contributions across key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action, quality education, no poverty, decent work and economic growth, and life on land.
Over the project’s lifetime, approximately 7 million tCO₂e of emissions will be avoided and/or sequestered through REDD+ activities, strengthening climate change mitigation and underscoring the project’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Project employees participate in thorough training initiatives designed to improve their expertise, while local communities receive support in their educational pursuits and access to necessary learning resources.
The project enhances the livelihoods of local communities by providing employment opportunities in afforestation and conservation activities, enabling community members to generate stable income.
By creating employment opportunities for both men and women, the project promotes economic empowerment and supports an inclusive, equitable workforce, contributing to sustainable economic development in the region.
The project ensures the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of natural resources such as forests, water, and soil, helping to maintain ecosystem services vital for local communities and biodiversity.
The emission reduction plan below summarises the expected tCO₂e savings for the initial five years of the Igombe REDD+ Project’s crediting period.
