Electricity across the Maldives has historically relied on diesel generators due to the absence of a centralized grid connecting scattered islands. This project replaces diesel generation with renewable solar power through rooftop PV and floating solar arrays engineered for marine environments—designed to handle saltwater exposure and tropical conditions.
By displacing fossil-fuel electricity on isolated island grids, the project generates measurable and verifiable CO₂ reductions that can be issued as carbon credits.
CORSIA-eligible: The project’s credits are positioned as CORSIA-eligible, enabling use for aviation decarbonisation alongside voluntary climate commitments.
The project supports SDG outcomes commonly associated with renewable energy deployment in island contexts, including:
Increases access to clean, reliable electricity by replacing diesel-based generation with solar power.
Supports employment through installation, operations, and ongoing maintenance.
Improves energy resilience and reduces dependency on imported fossil fuels.
Avoids emissions through direct displacement of fossil-fuel electricity.
Structured stakeholder engagement and grievance mechanisms strengthen transparency and accountability.
The emission reduction plan outlines the expected tCO₂e savings for the first five years of the project:
| Period | tCO₂e |
|---|---|
| 2025 – 2026 | 25,000 |
| 2026– 2027 | 45,000 |
| 2027 – 2028 | 45,000 |
| 2028 – 2029 | 45,000 |
| 2029 – 2030 | 45,000 |
| Total Emission Reduction Over 5 Year | 205,000 |
The project follows a robust MRV approach aligned with registry requirements, including metering, monitoring of electricity generation, operational documentation, and periodic third-party verification—supporting credible issuance of carbon credits over the crediting period.
