Key Activities

The project “Sustainable Forestry in Gambella, Ethiopia” encompasses a total area of 27,000 hectares, with 20,650 hectares allocated for forestry, 3,175 hectares designated for community-based agriculture, and another 3,175 hectares set aside as biodiversity reserve land. The forestry component focuses on afforestation activities that enhance carbon stocks across the landscape while actively involving nearby communities.

The project aims to create job opportunities for local communities living around the project area in Gog woreda. Both men and women will participate in plantation work, agricultural activities, and related infrastructure such as nursery management and site preparation—ensuring that the benefits of the project are broadly shared.

Sustainable Forestry in Gambella, Ethiopia

By combining afforestation, community agriculture, and biodiversity conservation, the project restores degraded landscapes, strengthens local economies, and builds resilience against climate change in one of Ethiopia’s most vulnerable regions.

Planned SDG Impact

The project delivers measurable contributions to multiple Sustainable Development Goals by sequestering carbon, creating employment, generating income, improving education, and safeguarding natural resources like water, soil, and forests.

6 Million tCO₂e – Climate Action

An estimated 6 million tCO₂e of emissions will be sequestered over the first 10 years through the three plantations, directly contributing to global climate mitigation.

Employment Opportunities

The project creates employment opportunities for local communities, engaging both men and women as well as young people in forestry, agriculture, and supporting activities.

Income Generation

By using resources derived from trees and plantations, the project supports the long-term sustainability of local communities through new income streams and value-added products.

Top Tier Education

Training initiatives are designed to improve the expertise of local communities and support them in their educational pursuits, ensuring access to necessary resources and knowledge.

Bridge Over the Gilo River

Building a bridge over the Gilo River is a cornerstone of the project, improving transport networks and enhancing access to essential services such as healthcare and education.

Sustainable Management

The project ensures the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of natural resources such as water and soil and plays a vital role in the sustainable management of the planted trees.

Emission Reduction Plan for the First 5 Years

The emission reduction plan below summarises the expected tCO₂e savings during the first five years of the project’s crediting period.
