Key Activities

The Massangui Carbon Project is a large-scale afforestation and REDD+ initiative in the Republic of the Congo, covering 23,000 hectares dedicated to forestry and agricultural activities. The project aims to conserve existing forests while restoring degraded land through tree planting and sustainable land-use practices.

Within this landscape, approximately 5,000 hectares are dedicated to REDD+ activities focused on preventing carbon loss from illegal logging and fires, while around 18,000 hectares are targeted for afforestation at a density of about 800 trees per hectare in non-forested areas. The afforestation component includes harvesting of eucalyptus species in years 10, 11, and 12 (33.3% each year), followed by regrowth cycles. The carbon removals achieved through this managed system are quantified as removal carbon credits.

Restoring Forest Landscapes and Protecting Nature in Congo

The project brings together conservation and reforestation to protect high-value forest patches, restore degraded areas, and enhance long-term carbon storage. By combining REDD+ activities with new tree planting, it safeguards existing forests while creating productive plantations that support local livelihoods and biodiversity.

Planned SDG Impact

The project is designed to contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through emissions reductions, improved livelihoods, education and training, and the sustainable management of land and forest resources.

2.8 Million tCO₂e – Climate Action

Over the project’s lifetime, an estimated 2.8 million tCO₂e will be avoided and/or sequestered through conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of forests, water, and soils.

Employment Opportunities – No Poverty

The project enhances local livelihoods by creating jobs in afforestation, conservation, and monitoring activities, enabling communities to generate income and improve their overall living conditions.

Improved Expertise – Quality Education

Employees receive thorough training to strengthen their technical skills, while local communities are supported in their educational pursuits and access to essential learning resources.

Economic Empowerment – Decent Work

By creating employment opportunities for both men and women, the project supports inclusive economic development and promotes fair, decent working conditions.

Sustainable Management – Life on Land

Conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of forests and other natural resources ensure long-term ecological health and resilience of the landscape.

Emission Reduction Plan for the First 5 Years According to the PDD

The emission reduction plan outlines the expected tCO₂e savings from both afforestation / reforestation (A/R) and REDD+ activities for the first five years of the project:
